What Is Full Mouth Reconstruction?
Full mouth reconstruction is a comprehensive restorative dentistry treatment that is designed to combat several oral health issues. Full mouth reconstruction can include a number of reconstructive and cosmetic procedures that can help patients get the healthy and beautiful smiles they deserve. Unlike smile makeover, which is solely a cosmetic procedure, full mouth reconstruction refers to treatment that is medically necessary for a patient to sustain their oral health. The treatment can address several issues, including tooth decay, excessive tooth wear, tooth loss, gum disease, bone deterioration and gum recession. Ultimately, it helps restore function to the mouth so that patients can speak and eat comfortably. Over the years, Dr. Durán has helped many patients rebuild their smiles, including patients with extremely worn dentition. Regardless of the severity of your condition, he can help.
Who Is a Candidate for Full Mouth Reconstruction?
Full mouth reconstruction is recommended for patients who are experiencing significant oral health problems that require dental work on the entirety of the mouth. Patients who are seeking full mouth reconstruction should abstain from smoking or drinking alcohol, as both are contributors to infection in the mouth. It is also important that full mouth reconstruction patients adopt good oral hygiene habits to be practiced during and after treatment. This will ensure the long-term success of the procedure.
During an initial consultation, Dr. Durán performs a thorough analysis of the patient. He performs an examination and works closely with the patient to determine the underlying causes behind their health issues, their individual habits, and their expectations regarding treatment. The examination may include X-rays as well as impressions of the mouth. During this time he also explains all procedure options, addresses any questions or concerns, and makes recommendations for treatment.
Full Mouth Reconstruction Treatment
Full mouth reconstruction often involves several different restorative procedures that are performed over the course of several months. During an initial appointment, Dr. Durán devises a treatment plan in accordance with the patient’s needs. Depending on the goal of treatment, any of the following procedures may be performed.
Dental crowns are ceramic caps that are placed over the teeth to protect them from further damage. In addition to preserving the health of the teeth, dental crowns can greatly enhance the appearance of the smile.
Inlays / Onlays
Dr. Durán is pleased to offer porcelain onlays to patients who are affected by tooth decay. An onlay is a dental filling that covers the inside of the tooth, as well as at least one side of the tooth, protecting it from further decay or damage. Porcelain onlays achieve a more natural look than traditional metal fillings.
Dental bridges are typically used for patients who are missing one or a few teeth. A dental bridge consists of an artificial tooth, and two dental crowns which hold the tooth in place. Dr. Durán offers conventional bridges as well as implant-supported dental bridges.
Are artificial, removable teeth that are offered to patients who are missing several or all of their teeth. Dr. Durán offers both partial and full dentures, depending on the patient’s individual needs.
Dental implants are a comprehensive solution to tooth loss. They can be used to replace a single tooth or all of the teeth. Unlike dentures, dental implants are permanent and cannot be removed. Implants provide the most stable and natural-looking result for patients who are replacing missing teeth.
As part of a full mouth reconstruction, Dr. Durán may also recommend TMJ therapy. The type of therapy used will depend on the severity of the TMJ disorder, but can range from over-the-counter medication to oral orthotics to be used at night.
